10 Habits That Will Actually Keep Your Home Clean (A Reality Check from Your Honest Friend)
You don't need to deep clean every day to have a consistently clean home. You just need to stop doing dumb things and start doing smart ones. Here are the 10 habits that make the biggest difference.
Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat this. I'm a mum of three (who prefers to stay anonymous, because my kids read everything), and I've seen enough messy homes β including my own kids' β to know that if your home is always a mess, it's not bad luck. It's bad habits. And I say this with love. Sort of.
The good news? You don't need to deep clean every day to have a consistently clean home. You just need to stop doing dumb things and start doing smart ones. Here are the 10 habits that make the biggest difference β proven by years of cleaning Adelaide homes and watching people shoot themselves in the foot.
1. Take Your Shoes Off at the Door β No, Seriously
This is the single most impactful thing you can do for your home, and most Australians still aren't doing it. Here's a hard truth: our clients who leave their shoes at the door have floors that take 6 to 10 more weeks to reach the same level of dirt as weekly clients who wear shoes inside. That's not a small difference. That's months.
And it's not just dirt. Research has found that shoes track in bacteria, viruses, and parasites from public surfaces β footpaths, shopping centres, public toilets β all things you really don't want your toddler crawling across, your elderly parent walking barefoot on, or your pet licking off the floor. Healthy adults usually handle it fine. But your kids, your pets, and anyone who's immunocompromised? Not so much.
Get yourself a proper pair of indoor slippers and leave them by the door. One rule. Massive results.
Bonus: Your floors will last longer, look better, and your cleaning will cost you less. You're welcome.
2. Buy Cheap Slippers for Your Guests (Yes, Really)
"But my guests will think it's weird."
Will they? Or will they respect that you care about your home? Either way β not your problem. Your carpet doesn't care about social awkwardness.
Grab a multipack of slippers from Kmart or Temu. Keep them in a little basket near the front door. It takes one minute to set up and saves you years of carpet damage and floor staining. Your guests wear them or they stay at the door. Simple as that.
If they genuinely refuse, you've now learned something important about which friends you invite over again.
3. No Food or Drinks on Carpeted Areas β Full Stop
Kids eating crackers on the carpet. Teenagers balancing their Milo on the couch armrest. Someone's smoothie on the rug. You already know how this ends.
The best spill to deal with is the one that never happened. Keep food and drinks in the kitchen, dining room, or other hard floor areas. This isn't about being uptight β it's about not paying a fortune to have your carpets professionally steam cleaned every few months because Weetbix happened again.
Make it a house rule. Enforce it. The dining table exists for a reason.
4. Clean Your Home Weekly β Not When It's a Disaster
The minimum cleaning frequency for a home that doesn't make you feel low-key embarrassed should be weekly. Not fortnightly. Not "when people are coming over." Weekly.
You don't need a perfect schedule β pick a day and stick to it. Need a guide? Check out our post on what happens during a professional house clean β it covers the full sequence and standard so you know exactly what to aim for.
If you'd rather not do it yourself, book a regular cleaning service in Adelaide β and here's the honest case for it: our cleaners will finish the same job 2 to 3 times faster than you will. So unless your time is worth nothing, the maths often favour outsourcing it and spending that time doing something you're actually good at or paid well to do. Work smarter, not harder.
5. Make the Men in Your Home Sit Down to Pee
I can already hear the complaints. Sit down and listen anyway.
When you stand and urinate, droplets can travel β not a little β potentially 50cm to 1 metre away from the toilet bowl. Those droplets can land on your floor, your toilet lid, your wall, your bath towels β and yes, possibly your toothbrush.
This isn't a theory. There's science on it, and there's a reason it's standard practice in many European and East Asian households.
Sit down. Aim solved. Bathroom stays cleaner longer. Toothbrush stays urine-free. Everybody wins.
6. Stop Letting Your Party Destroy Your Home
Hosting friends for a barbecue or a party is great. Having your carpet smell like beer and your kitchen look like a crime scene the next day is not.
Two options β both completely reasonable:
Option A: When you're organising the get-together, factor in a cleaning fee upfront. Split it among guests, and use it to book a professional cleaner in Adelaide the following morning β whether that's PF Cleaning's one-off cleaning service in Adelaide or another reputable company with solid reviews. Don't hand it to some random with a mop. Book a proper business.
Option B: Take the party to a local park. Adelaide has brilliant parks with free BBQ facilities. The mess stays outside, it's not your home, and you're not scrubbing sauce off your benchtop at midnight. Just clean up after yourself so the next family can enjoy it too.
If your friends push back on Option A β they're fine with trashing your place but not chipping in to fix it. That's good information to have.
7. Keep a Spray Bottle and Microfibre Cloth in Every Problem Zone
This one sounds too simple to matter. It absolutely matters.
Every spill that gets wiped immediately takes about 30 seconds to fix. Every spill that gets ignored, stepped on for two weeks, and then dried into the surface takes significantly longer β and costs you more when a cleaner has to deal with it.
Here's the minimum setup:
- 1 multipurpose spray + 1 microfibre cloth in the kitchen
- 1 multipurpose spray + 1 microfibre cloth in the bathroom
That's it. Two zones, two setups. Microfibre cloths only β buy a pack at Bunnings, they're cheap and they actually work. Paper towels smear; rags spread bacteria. Get the microfibre.
When something spills: spray, wipe, done. No drama. No staining. No awkward explanation to a cleaner two weeks later.
8. Declutter Regularly β Mess Hides Dirt
Here's something most people don't think about: clutter doesn't just look bad, it makes cleaning harder and less effective. Surfaces covered in stuff don't get wiped. Floors covered in things don't get vacuumed properly.
Once a month, do a quick pass through each room. Throw out what's rubbish, put away what's out of place. It takes 20 minutes and makes every clean β whether you do it or someone else does β significantly faster and more thorough.
Less stuff on surfaces = more surfaces actually getting clean.
9. Deal with Your Bins Before They Deal with You
If you're waiting until the bin smells to take it out, you've already lost.
Empty your kitchen bin before it gets full. This stops the overflow, the smell, and the fruit flies that appear out of nowhere the moment summer hits. Use bin liners β every time, no exceptions β so you're not scrubbing a disgusting bin base every fortnight.
Bathroom bins fill up faster than you think, especially in a shared bathroom. Check them weekly. It takes 10 seconds.
10. Have a "Drop Zone" β and Actually Maintain It
Keys, bags, shoes, mail, school bags, random shopping β every home has a place where everything lands when people walk in. If you don't design it intentionally, it becomes a spreading pile of chaos near your front door.
Set up a proper drop zone: a hook for bags and keys, a shelf or bench for shoes, a tray for mail. Keep it contained. Keep it tidy. If it starts overflowing, deal with it then β not in three weeks when you can't find your keys.
A drop zone only works if you actually maintain it. Once a week, spend two minutes clearing it out. That's your new rule.
The Bottom Line
None of this is revolutionary. None of this is hard. But consistently doing these 10 things will make your home dramatically cleaner with dramatically less effort β and it'll save you money on cleaning costs over time.
Start with habits 1, 4, and 7. Those three alone will make a visible difference within a month.
