How to Get Rid of Ants Without Toxic Chemicals
Ants in Adelaide are a near-universal problem, particularly in summer. Here's how to deal with them using cleaning and non-toxic methods β and why a clean home is your best long-term defence.
If you live in Adelaide, ants are part of life. The combination of warm summers, dry conditions and the biodiversity of South Australia's ant population means that at some point β usually during summer or after rain β you'll find a trail of ants crossing your kitchen bench, circling something sweet on the floor, or emerging from a gap in the skirting board.
The instinct is to reach for a can of insecticide. But repeated chemical spraying has limitations: it kills the ants you can see, disrupts the trail temporarily, and often results in the colony relocating slightly rather than being eliminated. And chemical sprays in a kitchen environment β where food is prepared β raise legitimate concerns.
There's a better approach. Understanding why ants come inside, removing what draws them, and using targeted non-toxic methods produces more lasting results than spray-and-wipe.
Why Ants Come Inside: The Root Cause
Ants are foragers. Worker ants leave the nest looking for two things: food and water. If they find either in your home, they lay a pheromone trail back to the colony β which sends more workers to follow the trail. What looks like a sudden invasion is actually a systematic foraging response to something in your home.
In summer: Ants come inside seeking water, particularly during Adelaide's dry heat. Even small moisture sources β condensation under the sink, a dripping tap, pet water bowls β attract them.
After rain: Heavy rain floods ground-level nests, and ants move inside to find dry ground. This is the "ants after rain" phenomenon most Adelaide homeowners know well.
All year for food: Uncovered food, crumbs, food residue in rubbish bins, sticky containers, pet food β any accessible food source draws ants.
Addressing the attraction is the foundation of ant control. Everything else is managing symptoms.
Step 1: Remove the Food Source
This is the most important step and the one most people skip because it requires changing habits, not just buying a product.
In the kitchen:
- Wipe benchtops after every meal preparation, not just after cooking sessions
- Store all open food in sealed containers β particularly sugar, honey, cereal, bread, biscuits
- Keep fruit in the fridge during summer (fruit left on the bench is a significant ant attractor)
- Wipe the stovetop after cooking β grease and food residue draws ants
- Clean up pet food immediately after pets have eaten β don't leave bowls of food on the floor
- Empty the kitchen bin daily in summer, and use a bin with a lid
- Wipe sticky sauce bottles and containers before storing them in the pantry
Floors:
- Sweep or vacuum kitchen and dining floors daily during an active ant problem
- Mop to remove residue β particularly under the dining table where food drops
Bins:
- Use bins with tight-fitting lids
- Empty regularly β outdoor bins near the house attract nests
Step 2: Remove the Water Source
In hot weather, water is often the primary draw:
- Fix dripping taps immediately
- Wipe under the sink dry
- Don't leave water standing in the sink
- Move pet water bowls outside if ants are circling them, or create a moat (see below)
- Ensure dishwasher and washing machine connections aren't leaking
Step 3: Disrupt the Trail
When you find an ant trail, the first response should be to disrupt the pheromone trail that's directing more ants to follow.
White vinegar: Wipe the entire visible trail with undiluted white vinegar on a cloth. The acetic acid destroys the pheromone chemical markers. Wipe behind and ahead of the visible trail β the trail extends beyond what you can see.
Soapy water: Mix dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Spray along the trail. Soap breaks down the pheromone compounds and kills the ants on contact (soap coats their spiracles β their breathing openings β and suffocates them).
After wiping the trail, clean the entire surface where the trail was running. This removes not just the pheromone but any food residue that drew them.
Step 4: Block Entry Points
Find where ants are entering and seal it. Common entry points:
- Gaps around pipes where they enter walls
- Gaps in skirting boards at corners
- Gaps around window and door frames
- Under doors without adequate door seals
- Cracks in external walls
Sealing: Use silicone sealant for permanent gaps. For temporary sealing while you investigate, petroleum jelly (Vaseline) applied across an entry point creates a barrier ants won't cross.
Natural deterrents at entry points:
- Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon applied at entry points disrupts ant trail communication. Effective as a temporary deterrent β ants avoid crossing it.
- Diatomaceous earth: A fine powder made from fossilised algae. Scratches the exoskeleton of ants that walk through it, causing dehydration and death. Non-toxic to humans and pets. Apply around entry points, along wall bases, and under appliances. Available at hardware stores and garden centres.
- Chalk lines: Calcium carbonate in chalk disrupts ant navigation. Drawing a chalk line across an entry point creates a barrier some ant species won't cross. Not effective for all species.
- Lemon juice: Spray or wipe lemon juice at entry points. The citric acid disrupts pheromone trails.
Step 5: Targeted Ant Bait (Non-Spray Method)
If the colony itself needs to be addressed β rather than just the foragers you can see β bait is more effective than spray. Bait works by allowing worker ants to carry the toxic substance back to the colony, where it is shared with the queen and other workers. This addresses the source rather than just the visible symptom.
Non-toxic bait options:
Borax and sugar bait: Mix 1 tablespoon of borax with 3 tablespoons of sugar and enough water to dissolve into a paste. Place small amounts on cardboard near (but not on) the ant trail. Ants carry the borax back to the colony β it's toxic to them in accumulated quantities but low risk to humans and pets at these concentrations. Keep away from direct pet access.
Diatomaceous earth bait stations: Commercial bait stations using diatomaceous earth rather than chemical insecticides are available at hardware stores and are considered non-toxic to humans, pets and most beneficial insects.
Commercial gel baits (low toxicity options): Ant gel baits (Raid Ant Baits, Terro) use borax as the active ingredient and are placed at ant entry points. Less chemical than spray products and more effective because they target the colony.
The Pet Food Bowl Problem
A pet food bowl on the floor is one of the most reliable ant attractors in summer. Solutions:
Moat method: Place the bowl inside a larger shallow container of water. Ants can't cross water to reach the food. Works extremely well for small to medium ant species.
Petroleum jelly on bowl base: Apply a ring of petroleum jelly around the base or legs of the bowl. Ants won't cross the greasy barrier.
Feed at set times and remove bowls: Rather than leaving food available all day, feed at set meal times and remove the bowl once the pet has finished.
Adelaide-Specific Context
Several ant species are particularly common in Adelaide homes:
Argentine ants (Linepithema humile): An invasive species that has established throughout Adelaide's metropolitan area. Highly adaptable, colony-forming, and difficult to eliminate because colonies link up into supercolonies. The borax bait approach is particularly effective for Argentine ants.
Black house ants: Common in kitchens. Respond well to trail disruption and removal of food sources.
Coastal brown ants (Pheidole megacephala): Common in outdoor areas and gardens, enter homes seeking food. Often nest under paving and concrete.
For any of these species, the same principle applies: address the food and water source first, disrupt trails, seal entry points, and use bait for the colony if needed.
When to Call a Pest Controller
If after addressing food sources, sealing entry points, disrupting trails and using bait you still have a significant ant problem, or if you're dealing with:
- Carpenter ants (larger ants that nest in timber β potential structural concern)
- Fire ants (rare in SA but a notifiable pest β bright copper-coloured, painful sting)
- A large established colony within the structure of the building
