Upholstery Cleaning: How to Clean Fabric Sofas Without Ruining Them
The wrong cleaning product on a fabric sofa can make stains permanent or damage the fabric permanently. Here's how to identify your sofa's fabric type, clean it safely, and treat stains correctly.
A fabric sofa gets used more than almost any other piece of furniture in the home. It absorbs body oil, food crumbs, drink spills, pet hair, skin cells, and everything else that comes with daily life. Over time, it shows it.
The problem is that fabric sofas are not all the same. Different fabrics require different cleaning approaches, and using the wrong product or too much moisture on the wrong fabric can set stains, cause shrinkage, leave water rings, or permanently damage the upholstery.
This guide covers how to identify what you're working with, the correct cleaning approach by fabric type, and how to handle stains without making them permanent.
Step One: The Cleaning Code
Most sofas in Australia have a cleaning code label β usually attached under a cushion, on the base frame, or sewn into the back of a removable cushion cover. This code tells you exactly what cleaning method is safe.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaning products only |
| S | Solvent-based (dry) cleaning only β no water |
| WS or SW | Either water or solvent-based cleaning is safe |
| X | Vacuum only β no cleaning products of any kind |
This matters. Using water on an S-coded fabric causes water staining, shrinkage and can permanently damage the fabric. Most people assume all fabric can be cleaned with water. It can't.
If there's no label, or you're unsure, test on a hidden area (the back of a cushion, an area behind a cushion) before applying any product to a visible surface.
General Maintenance Cleaning (All Fabric Types)
Regardless of fabric type, regular maintenance is the same:
Vacuuming: Weekly vacuuming with the upholstery attachment removes surface dust, crumbs, pet hair and debris before it works deeper into the fabric. Remove cushions and vacuum the base of the sofa, under the cushions, and in crevices. This prevents gradual soiling that becomes harder to address over time.
Cushion rotation: Rotating and flipping cushions (where they're double-sided) distributes wear evenly and prevents one side from becoming significantly more soiled and flattened than the other.
Immediate blotting: Any spill, blotted immediately with a clean dry cloth, removes a significant portion of the liquid before it soaks into the fabric. Don't rub β blot firmly by pressing straight down.
Cleaning W-Coded Fabrics (Water-Safe)
Most common fabric types β polyester, cotton blends, linen β fall into this category.
routine cleaning service in Adelaide:
- Vacuum thoroughly first.
- Mix a small amount of upholstery cleaner or dish soap with water (a few drops of soap in 500ml water).
- Dampen β don't soak β a clean microfibre cloth with the solution.
- Work in sections, wiping gently with the cloth. Don't apply the solution directly to the sofa β apply it to the cloth.
- Use a second clean damp cloth to wipe off any soap residue.
- Dry with a third dry cloth, pressing firmly to remove as much moisture as possible.
- Allow to air dry completely before using β damp upholstery that is sat on before fully dry can develop odour.
Critical: use as little moisture as possible. Even W-coded fabrics can develop water rings or mildew if too much moisture is applied and doesn't dry quickly. Light and damp, never wet.
Cleaning S-Coded Fabrics (Solvent Only)
Fabrics with an S code include some velvets, certain vintage or delicate fabrics, and some microfibre types.
Do not use water on S-coded fabric. Even a small amount of water can cause water staining that becomes permanent.
Use a dry cleaning solvent β available at hardware stores and some supermarkets (look for upholstery dry cleaning spray or solvent-based upholstery cleaner). Follow the product instructions precisely. Typically: apply sparingly to a clean cloth, blot gently, allow to dry.
For S-coded sofas with significant soiling, professional professional upholstery cleaning in Adelaide is the appropriate approach. Professionals have the equipment and products to clean solvent-coded fabrics without risk.
Cleaning Microfibre Sofas
Microfibre is a popular sofa material and has its own cleaning quirks. Most microfibre sofas are coded W or WS, but they show water rings easily if cleaned with too much moisture.
The rubbing alcohol method: This is widely recommended for microfibre and works well.
- Fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol β from pharmacies or hardware stores).
- Spray lightly onto the stained or soiled area. The alcohol dissolves oil and removes soiling without leaving water rings.
- Use a clean white cloth or a soft brush to scrub gently in circular motions.
- The alcohol evaporates quickly β as it dries, brush the microfibre with a soft brush (a clean nailbrush or upholstery brush) to restore the nap.
This method works on both W and S-coded microfibre, and the alcohol is safe for food surfaces.
Stain Removal by Type
Food and Drink Stains
Act immediately. Remove solids first (scoop, don't rub). Blot liquids up as much as possible with a dry cloth.
For W-coded fabric: apply a small amount of dish soap solution (as above) to the stained area, blot, and repeat. For oily food stains, a small amount of dry baking powder or cornflour applied to the fresh stain and left for 15 minutes to absorb the oil before brushing off and cleaning helps.
Wine and Juice
For fresh wine or juice on W-coded fabric: blot up as much as possible, then pour a small amount of sparkling water onto the stain β the carbonation helps lift the pigment. Blot. Repeat. Then apply dish soap solution and blot.
A commercial upholstery stain remover (Wine Away or similar) is highly effective on fresh wine stains.
Grease and Oil
Apply a small amount of baking soda or cornflour to the fresh grease stain and press gently into the fabric. Leave for 15β20 minutes to absorb the oil. Brush off. Then clean with dish soap solution on W-coded fabric, or dry solvent on S-coded fabric.
Pet Stains and Odour
Blot up liquid immediately. Apply an enzyme cleaner (Bio-Zet Attack, Nature's Miracle or similar) following the product instructions. Enzyme cleaners break down the uric acid in pet urine that causes odour β standard cleaners mask the smell temporarily but don't eliminate it.
For dried pet stains: dampen the area first, apply enzyme cleaner, leave for the dwell time on the product label, then blot up. The enzyme needs time to work.
Ink
Rubbing alcohol on a white cloth, blotted (not rubbed) onto the ink stain. Work from the outside edge of the stain toward the centre to prevent spreading. Multiple applications may be needed.
When to Call a Professional
If the sofa is S-coded and significantly soiled: Professional dry cleaning equipment is the appropriate solution.
If the stain has set and DIY treatment hasn't removed it: A professional upholstery cleaning service has stronger products and equipment (including steam injection and extraction) that can address stains that home methods can't.
For general deep cleaning of a heavily used sofa: Hot water extraction by a professional removes years of embedded skin oil, dust and residue that home cleaning can't reach.
