How to Clean a Microwave in Under 5 Minutes

Of all the kitchen appliances that accumulate grime, the microwave might be the most neglected. Food explodes. Soup bubbles over. Pasta sauce spatters across the ceiling of the cavity. And because you close the door after each use, you don't see it — until the smell becomes impossible to ignore, or you open it with a guest standing nearby.

The good news: cleaning a microwave properly takes under 5 minutes using steam, and requires no scrubbing for anything less than extreme neglect. Here's the method, plus what to do when it's been left far too long.

Why Steam Works

Baked-on microwave splatter is hard when it's dry. Steam loosens it. A few minutes of microwave-generated steam softens every residue on the interior walls, ceiling and floor — after which it wipes away with minimal effort.

This is the same principle used in oven self-cleaning cycles and steam mops: heat and moisture break the bond between the residue and the surface, converting what would be a 20-minute scrubbing job into a 1-minute wipe.

The 5-Minute Method

What you need:

• Microwave-safe bowl
• Water
• White vinegar (optional but effective)
• Microfibre cloth or paper towel

Steps:

1. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 250ml of water. Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. The vinegar isn't strictly necessary — water alone creates steam — but it adds mild deodorising and antibacterial action and cuts through grease slightly better.

2. Place the bowl in the microwave. If there's a rotating turntable plate, leave it in.

3. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. The water will boil and steam will fill the cavity.

4. Do not open the door immediately. Leave it closed for 2 additional minutes — the steam continues working on the residue during this time.

5. Carefully remove the bowl — it will be hot. Use oven mitts.

6. Remove the turntable plate and set aside.

7. Wipe the interior with a damp microfibre cloth — ceiling first, then walls, then floor. The residue should wipe away with virtually no pressure. No scrubbing.

8. Wipe the turntable plate in the sink with dish soap and a cloth. Replace.

9. Wipe the door interior, including the rubber seal around the edge.

10. Wipe the door exterior and the control panel with a damp cloth.

That's it. Under 5 minutes of active work.

For Heavily Neglected Microwaves

If the microwave hasn't been cleaned in a very long time and there's thick, carbonised splatter stuck to the surfaces:

Extended steam soak: Run the steam method twice in a row, leaving the door closed for 5 minutes after each cycle. The longer steam exposure softens thicker deposits.

Baking soda paste: For residue that still doesn't wipe off after steam treatment, make a paste of baking soda and water (thick enough to stick to vertical surfaces). Apply to the stubborn spots, leave for 5 minutes, then scrub with a damp cloth or non-scratch sponge. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that removes residue without scratching the microwave interior.

Dish soap directly: Apply a small amount of dish soap to a damp cloth and scrub resistant spots. The surfactants cut through grease that steam alone doesn't shift.

What not to use inside a microwave: Steel wool or abrasive scouring pads (scratch the interior coating), bleach (too harsh for the plastic interior and leaves a residue), or oven cleaner (not formulated for microwave interiors and can damage the coating).

The Turntable: Don't Forget the Underside

The turntable plate catches most of what falls and spills in the microwave. Wash it in the sink with warm soapy water and a cloth — both sides, including the edges.

The turntable support ring — the small plastic or ceramic roller ring that sits under the turntable plate — also accumulates grease and debris. Remove it and wash it at the same time. This ring is often forgotten and can be a source of smell even when the rest of the microwave is clean.

Eliminating Stubborn Microwave Smells

Fish, curry, burnt popcorn — some smells linger in a microwave even after cleaning.

Lemon method: Cut a lemon in half and place cut-side down on the turntable plate. Microwave for 1 minute. The citrus oils released deodorise the cavity.

Vanilla method: Place a microwave-safe cup with 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and half a cup of water in the microwave. Heat for 2 minutes. The vanilla neutralises strong food odours.

Baking soda overnight: Place an open container of baking soda inside the closed microwave overnight. Baking soda absorbs residual odour molecules.

Coffee grounds: A small bowl of used coffee grounds placed in the closed microwave overnight is effective for particularly stubborn smells like fish or burnt food.

Prevention: Keeping It Clean Between Sessions

Use a microwave cover. A vented microwave cover placed over food before heating eliminates the vast majority of splatter. They cost $5–$10 and are available at any supermarket. This is the single most effective prevention measure.

Use microwave-safe lids or plates over bowls with liquids that might bubble over.

Wipe immediately after spills. A fresh spill wipes off in 10 seconds. The same spill baked on by subsequent use requires steam treatment.

Weekly wipe: A quick 30-second wipe of the microwave interior once a week — even with a damp cloth and no cleaning product — prevents any buildup from forming.

How Often Should You Deep Clean a Microwave?

For a regularly used household microwave, a steam clean monthly is sufficient if you're wiping regularly in between. If you use the microwave multiple times a day, fortnightly. If you never use a cover, weekly is realistic.

The test: if there's visible residue on the ceiling or walls, or any smell when you open the door, it needs a steam clean now.
