How to Clean a Rangehood Filter (This Gets Overlooked Every Time)
A clogged rangehood filter is a fire hazard, a cooking smell problem, and the reason your kitchen feels greasy after cooking. Here's how to clean it properly and how often.
Of all the things in a kitchen that get overlooked in regular cleaning, the rangehood filter is the most consistently neglected. It's out of sight, it requires removing something rather than just wiping, and most people don't know how often it needs attention.
The result: filters that are so clogged with hardened grease that they've effectively stopped working, kitchens that smell of cooking long after the meal is finished, surfaces coated in a fine grease film from cooking vapour that the rangehood isn't extracting, and β in extreme cases β a genuine fire hazard from grease accumulation in a location that gets hot every time you cook.
This isn't a difficult task. It just needs to actually happen.
Two Types of Rangehood Filters
Understanding which type you have determines the cleaning approach.
Metal Mesh Grease Filters (Washable)
The most common type in Australian residential kitchens. A metal mesh filter β usually aluminium or stainless steel β that sits in the underside of the rangehood. Its job is to capture grease particles from cooking vapour before they enter the motor and duct work.
Appearance: Silver or grey metallic mesh panels that slide or clip out of the rangehood. Usually 2β4 panels depending on rangehood size.
Cleaning: Washable β these can and should be cleaned regularly.
Charcoal/Carbon Filters (Recirculating Rangehoods)
Rangehoods that recirculate air (rather than ducting to outside) use a charcoal or carbon filter to absorb odours and grease before recirculating the air back into the kitchen.
Appearance: Usually a disc or pad of charcoal/carbon material, black in colour, sitting behind or above the metal mesh filter.
Cleaning: These cannot be cleaned. They must be replaced. Replacement frequency: every 3β6 months depending on cooking frequency. A charcoal filter that's been in service for over a year in a regularly cooked-in kitchen has lost most of its effectiveness.
How to Clean Metal Mesh Filters
What You'll Need
- Dish soap or degreaser
- Very hot water
- A large sink, tub or container big enough to submerge the filters
- A soft or medium brush (not steel wool)
- Or: a dishwasher
Method 1: Hot Water Soak and Scrub

Remove the filters. Slide or unclip the metal mesh filters from the underside of the rangehood. Most slide horizontally β push in one direction and the filter drops down. Some have a clip or latch.

Check the rangehood interior. With filters removed, look inside. The interior of the rangehood accumulates grease on the internal walls and around the fan. Wipe this with a degreaser-soaked cloth if accessible and visibly grimy.

Fill a sink or large tub with the hottest possible water. The heat is important β it softens the grease significantly, making it far easier to remove.

Add dish soap generously β much more than you'd use for dishes. Or add 2β3 tablespoons of a commercial degreaser. Baking soda (half a cup added to the water) also helps break down grease.

Submerge the filters and leave to soak for 15β30 minutes. For heavily soiled filters (if they haven't been cleaned in 6+ months), soak for up to an hour.

Scrub with a soft to medium brush. The grease should have softened significantly. Work across the mesh in both directions to clear the openings in the filter. You'll see brown grease and water running off.

Rinse thoroughly under hot running water until the water runs clear and the filter looks clean.

Allow to dry completely before replacing. A wet filter reinstalled reduces airflow and can cause moisture issues in the rangehood.
Method 2: Dishwasher
Most metal rangehood filters are dishwasher safe. Check your rangehood manual to confirm.
Place filters in the dishwasher β upright if they fit vertically, or on the lower rack. Run on the hottest, longest cycle with a full dishwasher tablet. For very greasy filters, pre-soak in hot soapy water for 20 minutes before the dishwasher cycle.
The dishwasher method is more convenient and generally produces excellent results. The combination of high heat, strong detergent and water pressure does the job with minimal effort.
How to Tell When the Filter Needs Cleaning
Visual check (the obvious method): Look at the filter from below. If the mesh looks dark, coated or clogged β it needs cleaning. A clean filter should have visible openings in the mesh. A blocked filter's mesh openings are filled with hardened grease.
The light test: Hold the removed filter up to a light. You should be able to see light through the mesh. If you can't, it's blocked.
Performance test: Hold your hand above the filter while the rangehood is running on high. You should feel strong suction. Weak or no suction with a clean motor indicates a blocked filter.
Cooking smell persistence: If your kitchen still smells strongly of cooking 30 minutes after you've finished and the rangehood has been running, the filter may be too blocked to extract effectively.
How Often to Clean the Filter
This depends on how often and how intensely you cook.

The most common mistake is cleaning the filter twice a year during a "deep clean" and otherwise ignoring it. For most Australian households that cook daily, monthly cleaning is appropriate.
A simple habit: clean the filter on the first of each month. Takes 10 minutes and prevents the gradual degradation in rangehood performance.
The Fire Risk Reality
Accumulated grease in a rangehood is a genuine fire hazard. Grease is flammable. A rangehood filter coated in thick, accumulated grease sits above a hot cooking surface. If a flare-up or a grease fire occurs on the stovetop, the built-up grease in the filter and the rangehood interior can ignite.
This is not a theoretical risk β kitchen fires originating from rangehood grease accumulation do occur. It's specifically mentioned in residential fire safety guidance.
Beyond the filter: the internal surfaces of the rangehood duct (in a ducted rangehood) also accumulate grease over years of cooking. This is harder to access for DIY cleaning and is one of the reasons commercial kitchen canopy cleaning (a specialist service) is mandatory under Australian food safety regulations. For a residential rangehood that has never had the duct cleaned, a professional rangehood service every few years is worth considering for homes with heavy cooking use.
Cleaning the Rangehood Exterior
While you have the filters out, clean the rest of the rangehood:
Underside face: Apply a kitchen degreaser, leave for 2β3 minutes, then wipe with a microfibre cloth. The bottom face of the rangehood accumulates significant grease.
Control panel: Wipe carefully with a slightly damp cloth β avoid getting moisture into the controls.
Interior (with filters removed): Wipe accessible interior surfaces with a degreaser-soaked cloth. Grease on the internal walls reduces efficiency and contributes to fire risk.
Exterior surfaces: Wipe down with a damp cloth. For stainless steel exteriors, wipe with the grain and finish with a tiny amount of mineral oil on a dry cloth.
