How to Keep a Clean Home When You Work Full Time
You're home for about 4 hours each evening and weekends. Here's the realistic system for keeping your home genuinely clean within that constraint β without spending every Saturday cleaning.
Working full time means you're home for roughly 4 hours each weekday evening β and even those hours are split between cooking, eating, decompressing, and sleeping. The weekend is when most full-time workers try to catch up on everything domestic, including cleaning β but spending Saturday cleaning is a miserable way to use the only two days you have.
The solution isn't to clean more. It's to clean smarter β integrating small, regular cleaning actions into the time you're already home, so that the home stays at a manageable baseline and the weekend clean becomes a quick reset rather than a marathon.
Here's the system that works.
The Core Principle: Daily Maintenance Prevents Weekend Recovery
The biggest cleaning time waster for full-time workers is the accumulation model: nothing gets done all week, and then Saturday becomes a 3β4 hour cleaning session to recover the baseline.
Compare that to the daily maintenance model: 10β15 minutes of targeted cleaning on weekdays, and Saturday's clean takes 30β45 minutes instead of 3 hours.
The math is straightforward: 10 minutes x 5 days = 50 minutes of weekday cleaning. If that 50 minutes prevents a 3-hour Saturday session, you've saved 2+ hours total and distributed the load across the week when it's easier to manage.
The question is which 10 minutes of cleaning to do each evening.
The Evening Routine: 10β15 Minutes Per Night
This is the backbone of the system. After dinner each evening, before sitting down, these tasks take 10β15 minutes and have the most impact on maintaining a liveable home.
After dinner (7β10 minutes):
- Wipe benchtops and table
- Clean stovetop if cooked (fresh grease wipes in 30 seconds; day-old grease takes much longer)
- Dishes into dishwasher or hand-washed
- Bin emptied if full
- Floor swept if needed
Quick scan of the rest of the house (3β5 minutes):
- Pick up anything out of place in the main living area
- Bring any dishes, cups or glasses from other rooms to the kitchen
- Quick wipe of the bathroom basin and toilet seat (1 minute β it's the difference between a bathroom that looks clean and one that doesn't)
That's it for weeknights. The kitchen is never left in a state that requires significant recovery. The rest of the house stays manageable.
The Rotating Daily Task
Beyond the evening routine, one additional task per night keeps specific areas from accumulating:
Monday: Vacuum the living areas and hallway Tuesday: Wipe bathroom surfaces properly β toilet, basin, mirror Wednesday: Mop the kitchen and bathroom floors Thursday: Wipe all benchtops, the stovetop properly, and kitchen appliance fronts Friday: Change bed linen and put on the wash
Each of these takes 10β15 minutes at most. Spread across the week, they mean that every major cleaning task is done roughly weekly without ever taking a large chunk of time at once.
Weekend Cleaning: 45 Minutes, Not 3 Hours
If the weekday routine has been maintained, the weekend clean is light.
Saturday or Sunday (45 minutes total):
Bathroom (15 minutes):
- Full toilet clean
- Shower/bath wipe-down
- Mop the floor
Bedrooms (10 minutes):
- Quick dust of surfaces
- Vacuum
Living areas (10 minutes):
- Dust accessible surfaces
- Vacuum if not done mid-week
Kitchen (10 minutes):
- Any residual that the daily wipe-down didn't cover
- Inside of microwave if needed
- Bin change
This is a reset, not a deep clean. The goal is maintaining the baseline β not achieving a show-home standard every week.
The Sunday Reset
A separate 20-minute Sunday reset β not cleaning, but organisation β makes the following week easier:
- Clear anything on benchtops that shouldn't be there
- Catch up on laundry (fold and put away)
- Prepare the week (anything that makes morning easier reduces the chaos that makes homes messy)
Clutter is harder to clean around than an organised space. The Sunday reset addresses clutter, which makes weekday cleaning faster.
Habits That Make the Biggest Difference
These micro-habits each take under 60 seconds and collectively make a significant difference to how much cleaning accumulates:
"Don't put it down, put it away." Every item that gets placed "temporarily" becomes clutter that requires cleaning around. The habit of putting things away immediately rather than setting them down temporarily is transformative over a week.
Wipe the stovetop after every cook. Fresh splatter: 20 seconds with a damp cloth. Dried splatter the next day: 5 minutes with a degreaser. The difference is enormous, and the fresh wipe takes almost no time.
Rinse dishes immediately. Dried food on dishes requires soaking or scrubbing. Rinsed immediately, dishes take seconds in the dishwasher. This habit also keeps the sink clean.
Make the bed every morning. Takes 2 minutes. Makes the bedroom look clean regardless of everything else.
Wipe the basin after brushing teeth. Toothpaste in the basin sets into a hard residue quickly. A 10-second wipe with a cloth after brushing keeps the basin clean all week.
Squeegee the shower screen after every shower. 20 seconds. Completely prevents hard water build-up on glass. Means you almost never need to scrub the shower screen.
When to Hire a Cleaner
If the 10-minute daily routine is realistic but you don't want to spend even 45 minutes on weekends, or if the home is large enough that the above system doesn't maintain it adequately, a professional fortnightly cleaning in Adelaide is an extremely common and practical solution for full-time workers.
At the professional rate, a fortnightly 3-bedroom clean costs $200β$280. That's roughly $400β$560 per month. For a dual-income household, this is often straightforwardly worthwhile relative to the combined hourly rate of two professionals spending 2β3 hours each cleaning.
The model that works best for most full-time workers who hire a cleaner:
- Professional cleaner every fortnight handles bathrooms, kitchen deep wipe, vacuuming, mopping
- Daily maintenance routine (10 minutes after dinner) maintains the home between cleans
- No significant cleaning on weekends
This is genuinely how a lot of Adelaide's professional households manage it β not because they can't clean, but because the time is worth more spent on other things.
At PF Cleaning, many of our clients are full-time working households who maintain the daily habits and leave the fortnightly clean to us. Contact us to discuss what a regular schedule would look like for your home.
