The Honest Guide to Natural Cleaning Products (What Works, What Doesn't)
Vinegar and bicarb are not magic. Some natural cleaners are genuinely effective. Others are myths. Here's the honest assessment of what natural cleaning products actually do.
Natural cleaning has developed a loyal following β partly from genuine concerns about chemical exposure and environmental impact, partly from the appeal of simple, cheap ingredients already in the pantry. The internet is full of recipes combining vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice and essential oils that promise to clean everything.
Some of these actually work well. Others are ineffective. And a few are actively counterproductive. After years of professional cleaning where results matter and there's no room for products that don't work, here's the honest assessment.
The Chemistry Basics: Why This Matters
Cleaning chemistry isn't complicated at a fundamental level. Most cleaning tasks require one of the following:
- Surfactants to lift grease and oil (dish soap, castile soap)
- Acid to dissolve mineral deposits and neutralise alkaline residues (vinegar, citric acid)
- Alkalis to break down grease and organic matter (baking soda, washing soda)
- Oxidisers to bleach stains and kill pathogens (hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate)
- Abrasives to physically scrub residue off surfaces (baking soda, salt)
- Disinfectants to kill microorganisms (some essential oils at sufficient concentration, alcohol, commercial disinfectants)
The problem with many natural cleaning recipes is that they combine products incorrectly β neutralising their effectiveness β or use products for tasks they're not chemically suited for.
What Actually Works
White Vinegar β (Descaling, Glass, Deodorising)
White vinegar (5% acetic acid) is genuinely useful and has well-defined applications:
Does well:
- Dissolving calcium carbonate (limescale, hard water deposits) β on taps, shower heads, shower glass, kettles, coffee machines
- Cutting mild soap scum
- Deodorising (neutralises alkaline odours like fish, pet urine)
- Streak-free glass and mirrors when used with a dry microfibre cloth
- Fabric softener substitute in the wash (added to the rinse cycle)
- Removing mineral deposits from dishwashers
Does not do well:
- Killing most bacteria and viruses (vinegar has mild antibacterial properties but is not a registered disinfectant and does not meet the standard required to sanitise a food prep surface or a bathroom)
- Cutting grease (it's an acid β not a surfactant or degreaser)
- Cleaning stone surfaces (it etches natural stone)
Don't mix with: Bleach (produces chlorine gas).
Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) β (Abrasive Cleaning, Deodorising)
Does well:
- Mild abrasive cleaning β sinks, grout, oven residue that's been loosened
- Deodorising β absorbs odours from carpet, fridge, bins, washing machines
- Combined with vinegar on grout (the fizzing action loosens surface grime)
- Removing light stains from fabric (as a paste)
- Boosting laundry (added to a wash load)
Does not do well:
- Disinfecting
- Cutting grease (it's alkaline but not a degreaser)
- Dissolving mineral deposits (it's alkaline β the opposite chemistry needed)
Citric Acid β (Descaling, Better Than Vinegar for Some Applications)
Citric acid is more concentrated than acetic acid (vinegar) and more effective for descaling applications. Available as a powder from supermarkets, health food stores and cleaning supply shops.
Uses:
- Dishwasher and washing machine cleaning cycles
- Removing heavy limescale from taps and showerheads
- Cleaning coffee machines and kettles
- More potent than vinegar for hard water removal
Dish Soap / Castile Soap β (General Surface Cleaning)
Surfactant-based soaps are genuinely effective for cutting grease and lifting dirt from most surfaces. Diluted dish soap (a few drops in a spray bottle of water) makes an effective general-purpose cleaner for benchtops, floors, tiles and most household surfaces.
Castile soap (olive oil based liquid soap) is a concentrated, natural alternative with similar effectiveness to standard dish soap.
Limitation: Neither is a disinfectant.
Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) β (Mould, Stains, Mild Disinfection)
Available from pharmacies as a 3% solution. Hydrogen peroxide is a mild oxidiser that:
- Kills mould on surfaces effectively
- Removes organic stains (blood, wine, coffee)
- Has genuine disinfecting properties at appropriate concentrations
- Is safe on many surfaces including grout and fabric (test first on delicate fabrics)
More effective than vinegar for disinfection. Safe to use on surfaces where bleach would be too harsh.
Don't mix with: Vinegar (produces peracetic acid, irritating to eyes and airways at high concentrations). Use one or the other.
Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) β (Degreasing, Heavy-Duty Cleaning)
More aggressive than baking soda β this is a stronger alkali. Effective for:
- Heavy grease removal
- Laundry boosting
- Cleaning ovens and stovetops
Use gloves β it can irritate skin. Not appropriate for aluminium surfaces.
What Doesn't Work (Or Is Overstated)
Vinegar + Baking Soda Together β (The Famous Fizzing Combination)
This is the most widespread natural cleaning myth. When you mix vinegar (acid) and baking soda (alkali), they react and fizz. The fizzing looks impressive and feels like something powerful is happening. What's actually happening: they're neutralising each other, producing water, CO2 (the fizz) and sodium acetate (a salt).
The resulting solution is approximately pH neutral β not acidic, not alkaline. It's essentially salty water with some mild surfactant action. The products you started with were more useful separately than the combination is together.
The exception: when used in sequence (baking soda applied, then vinegar sprayed over it), the brief fizzing action on a surface like grout can mechanically loosen grime before either product fully neutralises. This has some utility. But the "combined cleaner" recipe made by mixing them together in a bottle is just water.
Essential Oils as Disinfectants β (At Normal Concentrations)
Tea tree oil, eucalyptus, lavender β these have documented antimicrobial properties in laboratory conditions. But the concentrations required for reliable disinfection are much higher than typical recipes use, and "disinfectant" efficacy requires testing against specific pathogen standards that these products don't typically meet.
A 5-drop-in-water tea tree spray smells pleasant and may kill some bacteria at the surface β but it is not a disinfectant in any meaningful sense. Don't use it as a substitute for proper bathroom disinfection.
As a fragrance addition to a legitimate cleaner, fine. As a disinfectant, no.
Lemon Juice β οΈ (Limited Use, Often Misapplied)
Lemon juice is a mild acid (citric acid) with some antibacterial properties and a pleasant smell. It can do some of what vinegar does β but less effectively and with more mess. It's also acidic enough to damage natural stone (just like vinegar).
On stainless steel: short contact time with lemon can remove light tarnish. But leaving citrus on stainless steel damages the surface over time.
As a cleaning product, fresh lemon juice is inconsistent and expensive. Citric acid powder in water achieves the same acidic action more predictably.
Salt β οΈ (Abrasive Only, Limited Applications)
Salt has genuine abrasive utility for scrubbing cutting boards, cleaning cast iron pans, and removing wine stains from fabric when applied immediately. It doesn't disinfect, degrease or descale.
Often overstated in natural cleaning recipes as a general cleaner. It's just an abrasive.
The Honest Summary
Natural cleaners that are genuinely useful and have well-defined applications: white vinegar, citric acid, baking soda, washing soda, castile/dish soap, hydrogen peroxide.
Natural cleaners that are overstated or misapplied: the vinegar-baking soda combination, essential oils as disinfectants, lemon juice as a general cleaner.
The honest limitation of natural cleaning: no natural product reliably meets the disinfection standard required for bathroom surfaces, food preparation areas, and illness management. For these applications, a commercial disinfectant β or at minimum, diluted bleach β is the appropriate choice.
A hybrid approach makes the most sense: natural products for appropriate cleaning tasks (descaling, general surface wiping, laundry boosting, deodorising), and targeted commercial products where disinfection is genuinely required.
