Why You Should Never Use Bleach on These 7 Surfaces
Bleach is powerful β and permanently destructive on the wrong surfaces. Here are the 7 surfaces where bleach causes damage that can't be reversed, and what to use instead.
Bleach is one of the most effective disinfectants available for home use. It kills a broad spectrum of bacteria, viruses and fungi, it whitens, and it's inexpensive. For the right surfaces and applications, it's irreplaceable.
For the wrong surfaces, bleach causes permanent, irreversible damage. The corrosive chemistry that makes it so effective as a disinfectant is the same chemistry that destroys certain materials on contact β and the damage is often immediate.
Here are the seven surfaces where bleach should never be used, why, and what to use instead.
1. Natural Stone (Marble, Granite, Travertine, Limestone, Slate)
What bleach does: Natural stone is calcium-carbonate based (marble, limestone, travertine) or silicate-based (granite, slate). Bleach's strongly alkaline pH strips the surface sealer from natural stone and can etch the surface, creating dull patches that don't respond to normal cleaning. Over repeated use, bleach degrades both the stone surface and the sealant that protects it from staining.
The permanent damage: Etched patches, dull areas where shine has been lost, and increased porosity leading to more staining.
What to use instead: pH-neutral stone cleaner. For disinfection needs on stone, a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (3%) is gentler and less likely to cause damage β but still test in an inconspicuous area first.
2. Stainless Steel
What bleach does: The hypochlorite ion in bleach reacts with stainless steel's protective chromium oxide layer. This removes the corrosion resistance that makes stainless steel "stainless." Over time β and sometimes relatively quickly with strong concentrations or prolonged contact β bleach causes pitting, rust spots and permanent surface degradation.
The permanent damage: Rust spots, pitting, and loss of the smooth, corrosion-resistant surface. Particularly common in stainless steel sinks where bleach is poured directly.
What to use instead: For disinfection of stainless steel, a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution or a stainless steel-safe disinfectant spray. For general cleaning, dish soap and water or a dedicated stainless steel cleaner.
3. Coloured Grout
What bleach does: Bleach is an oxidising bleaching agent. It removes pigment. On coloured grout β grey, charcoal, brown, beige β bleach lightens or removes the colour unevenly, creating patchy, pale areas that are permanent.
The permanent damage: Bleached, patchy grout that looks worse than the original staining you were trying to remove.
What to use instead: For cleaning coloured grout, a pH-neutral bathroom cleaner and a grout brush. For mould in coloured grout, test in an inconspicuous area with a very diluted bleach solution (1:20 minimum) if necessary β or use a specialist tile and grout cleaner formulated for coloured grout.
Note: Bleach is appropriate for white or cream grout where colour change isn't a concern. It's the coloured grout specifically where bleach causes visible, permanent damage.
4. Septic Systems
What bleach does: A septic system functions through biological action β the bacteria that break down waste in the tank. Bleach, poured down drains and toilets in any meaningful quantity, kills these bacteria. Without the bacterial population, the septic system stops working correctly. Solids accumulate, the tank requires emergency pumping, and system damage can result.
The specific problem: Regular use of bleach-based cleaners in a home on a septic system (rather than mains sewer) gradually depletes the bacterial population in the tank, causing increasing dysfunction.
What to use instead: For toilet and bathroom cleaning in homes with septic systems, use septic-safe cleaning products β specifically products labelled as septic-safe. These use formulations that biodegrade safely without destroying the tank's bacterial ecosystem. White vinegar and baking soda are appropriate for many applications.
5. Aluminium
What bleach does: Bleach reacts with aluminium in a process called oxidation, producing pitting and corrosion. Aluminium surfaces β rangehood filters, aluminium window frames, aluminium furniture, aluminium cookware β develop a dull, pitted appearance after bleach exposure. The reaction can also produce hydrogen gas in enclosed spaces, which is a hazard.
The permanent damage: Pitting and discolouration on aluminium surfaces. On rangehood filters specifically, bleach causes visible damage to the mesh and frame.
What to use instead: For aluminium rangehood filters, hot water and dish soap. For aluminium window frames, a damp microfibre cloth with mild detergent. For aluminium cookware, dish soap and a non-scratch sponge β never bleach.
6. Certain Fabric and Upholstery
What bleach does: Most people know not to put coloured clothes in bleach β it removes the dye. The same applies to upholstered furniture, rugs, curtains and any coloured fabric surface. Bleach creates permanent, pale patches wherever it contacts coloured fabric.
The less obvious situation: Even applying bleach in a space where it can splash or vapour β spraying bleach near upholstered furniture or fabric curtains β can cause bleach damage through misting or contact. And diluted bleach spilled on carpet can cause immediate, permanent colour change.
What to use instead: For stain removal and cleaning of fabric and upholstery, enzyme-based cleaners, hydrogen peroxide (test first on coloured fabrics), or specific upholstery cleaners. For professional carpet cleaning in Adelaides, a carpet-specific cleaner rather than any product containing bleach.
7. Painted or Varnished Wood
What bleach does: On painted or varnished timber surfaces, bleach strips paint, damages varnish, and lightens the underlying timber. Painted kitchen cabinets, timber furniture with a painted or varnished finish, timber doors β bleach leaves dull patches, removes the surface coat, and in some cases causes the timber to swell with moisture.
The permanent damage: Bleached or damaged paint/varnish that requires repainting or refinishing. The lighter patches where the surface coat has been damaged are permanent without refinishing.
What to use instead: For cleaning painted or varnished timber surfaces, a damp microfibre cloth with mild dish soap. For any disinfection need, a diluted quaternary ammonium disinfectant or hydrogen peroxide solution that is safe for painted surfaces.
Surfaces Where Bleach IS Appropriate
To be clear about the right applications for bleach:
- White ceramic and porcelain tiles and grout: Effective and safe for mould removal and whitening
- White toilet porcelain: Standard and appropriate
- Bathroom floor tiles (ceramic/porcelain, light-coloured): Appropriate for disinfection and mould treatment
- White cotton and linen laundry: In appropriate quantities as directed
- Concrete and masonry (external): For algae and mould treatment
The rule is straightforward: bleach on white, non-reactive hard surfaces is appropriate. Bleach on natural stone, metals (stainless steel, aluminium), coloured grout, coloured fabric, timber surfaces, or anything connected to a septic system β don't.
