How to Prepare Your Home for a Cleaner (To Get the Most Out of Every Visit)
A little prep before your cleaner arrives means a much better result. Here's what to do — and what not to do — before a professional cleaner comes to your home.
Professional cleaning delivers the best results when the client and cleaner are working as a team — not in opposition to the mess, and not cleaning around each other's oversight. The cleaner's job is to clean. The client's job is to create the conditions in which cleaning can be thorough.
This guide is about what that looks like in practice. What to do before your cleaner arrives, what to communicate, and what common mistakes reduce the quality of the result.
The Fundamental Principle: Cleaners Clean, They Don't Tidy
This is the most important thing to understand about working with a professional cleaner. A cleaner's skill and time is in cleaning surfaces — vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing, disinfecting, polishing. Their time is not well spent moving your belongings from one surface to another, sorting your mail, deciding where things should go, or making decisions about your stuff.
This isn't a criticism of clients — it's a statement about the division of labour. You know where things belong. The cleaner knows how to clean. The best outcome happens when the client has placed things where they belong and the cleaner can access the surfaces directly.
Before the Cleaner Arrives: The Practical Checklist
Clear Surfaces
The single most impactful thing you can do:
- Kitchen benchtops: Remove small appliances, utensils, mail, bottles and anything else that's accumulated. Bench surfaces need to be accessible for proper cleaning.
- Bathroom counters: Move toiletries, cosmetics and medications to a drawer or under the sink. The countertop and the area around the taps need to be clear.
- Bedroom surfaces: Remove what's accumulated on bedside tables and dressers so they can be properly wiped.
- Floors: Pick up clothing, shoes, toys, bags and anything else off the floor in every room. A cleaner cannot vacuum around clothing or under objects on the floor effectively.
You don't need to have a show-home before the cleaner arrives. You need clear surfaces and clear floors. That's it.
Put Dishes Away or Into the Sink/Dishwasher
Dishes left on benchtops prevent thorough benchtop cleaning. Load the dishwasher, stack dishes in the sink if needed, but clear the benchtop.
Secure Pets
If you have dogs, cats or other animals:
- Put dogs in a secure yard area, laundry, or a room that isn't being cleaned
- Alert the cleaner to any animals that may be encountered unexpectedly
- Put pet food bowls away so they can be replaced properly after floor cleaning
Pet safety and cleaner comfort are both served by clear communication about animals.
Put Away Valuables and Sensitive Items
A professional cleaner should be trustworthy — and the good ones are. But best practice is still to put away:
- Jewellery and watches (particularly small items that could be knocked off surfaces)
- Cash
- Prescription medications (many cleaners prefer not to have to work around medication)
- Sensitive documents
This is not about distrust. It's about clarity — knowing where your valuables are, and not creating situations where something gets moved and can't be found later.
Communicate Your Priorities
Before the cleaner starts — or at the time of booking — communicate:
- Any areas or tasks you're particularly concerned about
- Any no-go zones (a study where you don't want anything moved, a child's room where toys are kept in a specific system)
- Any surfaces that need special care (stone benchtops, delicate fixtures, custom cabinetry)
- Any areas you'd like skipped
Good cleaners respond well to clear direction. Vague dissatisfaction after the fact is much harder to resolve than a clear brief at the start.
Point Out Problem Areas
If there's something specific you want addressed — a stain on the carpet, mould in the shower, a particularly greasy stove — point it out at the start. Don't assume the cleaner will notice everything you've noticed. What's been bothering you for weeks may not be the most obvious thing in the room to fresh eyes.
What to Do During the Clean
Give Cleaners Unobstructed Access
If you're home while cleaning is happening:
- Avoid hovering in the rooms being cleaned
- Don't conduct meetings or phone calls in the middle of the space being worked
- Be available if there are questions, but not underfoot
Cleaners work most efficiently when they have clear, uninterrupted access to each space in sequence.
Don't Start New Mess
Try to avoid creating new mess in areas that have just been cleaned. If the cleaner has just finished the kitchen and you need to make a meal, that's fine — but be aware that the kitchen is done and try to minimise.
If You Need to Communicate
If something is done in a way you'd like changed, say so calmly and directly in the moment — not in a passive way and not after the cleaner has left. Most professional cleaners genuinely appreciate direct, specific feedback rather than having to guess whether the client is happy.
If You're Not Home During the Clean
Many clients prefer to be out during the clean — and this works well with the right setup.
Access: Agree on the access method in advance. Key, key safe code, smart lock code — whichever approach, confirm it before the day and make sure it works.
Communication plan: Know how to reach each other if there's a question. The cleaner may need to ask about a specific situation.
What to leave out: If there are specific products you want used, or specific items you want left untouched, leave a note or communicate this in advance.
Return time: Try not to return while the clean is still in progress if you can help it — returning to a half-cleaned home is disruptive for both parties and can reduce the efficiency of the final stages.
After the Clean
Give Feedback Promptly
If something was missed or not done to standard, contact the cleaner or company the same day. Most professional cleaners have a re-clean policy — they'll return and address any issues at no charge if notified promptly.
Waiting a week to mention something makes the feedback harder to act on and harder to verify.
Let Things Dry
Hard floors mopped with a cleaning solution need to dry before being walked on. If you return and floors are still slightly damp, give them 15–30 minutes. Walking on a wet mopped floor transfers residue from shoes onto the clean surface.
Note What's Changed
If the cleaner has moved items to clean under them (as they should), take a moment to check that things are back in roughly the right place. Minor repositioning is normal; if something has been moved significantly and put somewhere unexpected, note it for the next visit.
Building a Good Long-Term Relationship With Your Cleaner
The best client-cleaner relationships are ones where both parties communicate clearly and consistently. Some things that build a good relationship:
Consistency: Same day, same time, same clear expectations each visit. Consistency makes the cleaner's job predictable and allows them to get into a rhythm that produces better results.
Honest feedback early: If something isn't right, say so promptly. Small issues addressed early don't become resentment.
Recognise good work: If your cleaner has done something particularly well or gone above and beyond, say so. Positive reinforcement works in professional relationships just as it does anywhere else.
Fair notice for changes: If you need to change the schedule, give as much notice as possible. Cleaners manage their schedules around their clients and short-notice changes cause real disruption.
At PF Cleaning, we communicate these expectations clearly with every client from the start. A clear brief, a prepared home, and prompt feedback from both sides is how we consistently deliver the result our clients are paying for. book a professional cleaning service in Adelaide.
