How to Get Rid of Hard Water Stains on Shower Glass (The Method That Actually Works)
Spray and wipe won't touch hard water staining on shower glass. This is the professional method for removing calcium and limescale buildup β including the severe cases.
If you live in Adelaide, you know the problem. The shower glass starts out clear, and within weeks it has a white, cloudy film that no amount of spray-and-wipe seems to shift. You scrub harder. You try a different product. The haze stays.
That haze is calcium carbonate β the mineral residue left behind when Adelaide's famously hard water evaporates off glass. And the reason regular bathroom spray doesn't remove it is simple: bathroom spray is not designed for mineral deposits. You need a different chemistry entirely.
Having cleaned hundreds of Adelaide shower screens professionally, I can tell you the method that works across every stage of buildup β from fresh mineral film through to years of accumulated calcium that looks like frosted glass.
Why Adelaide's Water Is So Hard
Adelaide's mains water is sourced largely from the Murray River and local reservoirs. It has a relatively high mineral content β particularly calcium and magnesium β compared to many other Australian cities. When water hits your shower glass and evaporates, those minerals are left behind as a white or grey deposit.
The longer the deposit sits, the more it bonds to the glass surface. Fresh deposits are a surface film that mild acid will dissolve in minutes. Old, accumulated deposits become embedded in microscopic surface etching and require a multi-step professional approach to remove.
Understanding which stage you're dealing with is the first step in choosing the right method.
Stage 1: Light Mineral Film (Months of Buildup)
This is the white haze that appears on glass that's been in regular use for a few months without dedicated descaling treatment. The glass looks cloudy but there's no texture to the deposit when you run your finger across it.
What you need: A mild acid solution β either white vinegar or a dedicated bathroom descaler (citric acid based products work well).
The method:
- Wet the glass with warm water
- Spray undiluted white vinegar (or your citric acid descaler) generously across the entire glass surface
- Leave to dwell for 10β15 minutes β do not wipe yet. The acid needs time to react with and dissolve the calcium carbonate
- Use a non-scratch scrubbing pad (not steel wool, not a rough scourer β a white or blue non-scratch pad) to scrub in circular motions
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water
- Dry immediately with a clean microfibre cloth or squeegee β letting the water dry on the glass will immediately start depositing minerals again
For fresh deposits, this method works well. You should see a clear improvement after one treatment. Repeat if necessary.
Why vinegar works: White vinegar is approximately 5% acetic acid. Calcium carbonate reacts with acid, dissolving into soluble calcium acetate that can be rinsed away. It's not a strong acid, which is why it works on fresh deposits but needs help with older, harder buildup.
Stage 2: Moderate Buildup (6β18 Months)
At this stage the deposit has a slightly rough texture. When you run your finger across the glass, you can feel the texture of the calcium. The glass looks significantly cloudy or hazy even after a wipe.
Vinegar alone won't cut through this. You need a stronger acid, longer dwell time, and more mechanical action.
What you need: A dedicated calcium, lime and rust (CLR) remover, or a concentrated citric acid solution mixed stronger than standard. A plastic razor blade or dedicated shower glass scraper.
The method:
- Apply your CLR or concentrated acid product to the glass β use a spray bottle or apply with a cloth
- Leave to dwell for 15β20 minutes. For stubborn buildup, you can hold a saturated cloth against the glass for longer dwell time β some professionals use cling wrap to keep the product against the glass
- Using a plastic razor blade at a low angle (30 degrees to the glass), carefully scrape along the glass surface. The acid has softened the calcium and the scraper lifts it. Use even, overlapping strokes and keep the glass wet throughout
- Apply more product and scrub with a non-scratch pad
- Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately
Critical safety note: Do not use acid products on natural stone surrounds, aluminium frames, or chrome fittings without checking the manufacturer's guidance. Acid will damage and etch these surfaces. Mask off any chrome fittings or natural stone before applying descaler to glass.
Stage 3: Severe Buildup (Years of Accumulation)
This is the most challenging scenario β glass that has turned nearly opaque, with thick calcium deposits that have built up over years. This is common in rental properties, homes where water has been left to dry on glass consistently, or properties with particularly hard water supply.
At this stage, acid treatment alone is not sufficient. The calcium has embedded itself into surface micro-etching and has bonded firmly to the glass. You need a combination of chemical treatment and abrasive polishing.
What you need: CLR or stronger acid product, plastic razor blade, and cerium oxide powder (a professional glass polishing compound) with a polishing pad.
The method:
- Complete the acid treatment from Stage 2 first β remove as much surface calcium as possible with chemical treatment and scraping
- Rinse and dry the glass
- Mix cerium oxide powder with water to form a paste (consistency of thin yoghurt)
- Apply to the glass with a damp cloth or polishing pad
- Polish in circular motions with firm pressure β this is manual labour. For large screens, a drill-mounted polishing pad significantly reduces effort
- Continue polishing, adding water to keep the compound wet. You will see white residue β this is the compound working
- Rinse the glass and check progress. Repeat until clarity is restored
Why cerium oxide works: Cerium oxide is a very fine abrasive used in professional glass polishing and optical lens work. It removes the micro-etched layer of glass that has calcium embedded in it, revealing fresh, clear glass beneath. It does not scratch glass when used correctly with a soft polishing pad.
This method is used by professional auto detailers to restore headlights and by professional window cleaners for severely scaled glass. It genuinely works.
Prevention: How to Stop Hard Water Staining Coming Back
Once the glass is clean, the goal is to keep it that way with significantly less effort than the initial restoration.
Squeegee after every shower: This is the single most effective prevention method. A quick 20-second squeegee after showering removes the majority of water droplets before they can evaporate and deposit minerals. A small squeegee hung in the shower is enough.
Weekly maintenance spray: Apply a vinegar or citric acid spray to the glass once a week and rinse off. This dissolves any mineral film before it builds up.
Water repellent coating: Professional-grade glass sealants (Rain-X for glass, or bathroom-specific products like Shower Guard) create a hydrophobic surface that causes water to bead and run off rather than spreading and evaporating on the glass. Applied correctly, these coatings make maintenance significantly easier. Reapply every 6β12 months.
Dry the screen after cleaning: Whenever you clean the glass, dry it completely rather than leaving it wet. Any water left to air-dry deposits minerals.
What Doesn't Work (And Why)
Standard bathroom spray: Most bathroom sprays are surfactant-based β they cut through soap scum and grease. They don't have sufficient acid content to dissolve calcium carbonate effectively. You'll shift surface soap scum but leave the mineral haze untouched.
Baking soda paste: Baking soda is alkaline β the opposite chemistry to what you need for calcium deposits. It's a mild abrasive that can help with light surface deposits, but it won't dissolve minerals. It may also scratch glass if rubbed with too much pressure.
Bleach: Bleach has no effect whatsoever on hard water staining. Calcium carbonate doesn't respond to oxidising agents. Bleach in a bathroom context kills bacteria and removes organic stains β it does nothing for mineral deposits.
Scrubbing harder with standard products: More effort with the wrong product doesn't help. Calcium deposits don't respond to mechanical force alone β you need the right chemistry to break the bond first.
When to Call a Professional
If the glass is at Stage 3 β severe accumulation with near-opaque haze β the cerium oxide polishing method works but it is time-consuming and physically demanding for large screens. A professional with a drill-mounted polishing pad and the right compounds can restore heavily scaled glass in a fraction of the time.
It's also worth calling a professional if you're unsure whether the glass is worth restoring. Severely etched glass β where the calcium has caused permanent damage to the surface β cannot be polished back to clarity. In that case, replacement may be the only option, and it's worth getting an assessment before spending hours polishing.
