Seasonal Cleaning
Spring Cleaning Adelaide: The Room-by-Room Plan That Doesn't Overwhelm You
Spring cleaning doesn't have to take a whole weekend and leave you exhausted. Here's a realistic room-by-room plan for Adelaide homes that gets the job done without the overwhelm.
Spring cleaning has a reputation for being the cleaning event that never actually happens. You plan it, you think about it, you maybe make a list β and then you spend the weekend doing about a third of it before running out of energy and motivation, leaving the rest to next weekend (which then doesn't happen either).
The reason most spring cleans fail is not laziness. It's poor planning. People try to do everything at once, in no particular order, without a clear sense of what "done" looks like. The result is exhaustion without completion.
This guide is a realistic, ordered plan for a complete Adelaide home spring clean. It's broken into rooms. Each room has a specific checklist. You can do one room per day across two weeks, or knock it out over a weekend with a clear sequence. Either way, you'll know exactly what to do and when you're finished.
Before You Start: The Mindset That Makes Spring Cleaning Work
Separate decluttering from cleaning. These are two different activities and mixing them is what makes spring cleaning take forever. Spend one session (a few hours, or even a whole day) purely on decluttering β deciding what leaves the house. Once that's done, cleaning is much faster because you're not making decisions while you clean.
Work room by room to completion. Don't start the kitchen, move to the bedroom, then back to the kitchen. Finish one room before starting another. Partial completion of multiple rooms is demoralising. Fully completed rooms are motivating.
Top to bottom, always. In every room, start at the ceiling and work down to the floor. Dust falls downward β if you clean the floor first and then wipe the shelves, you're cleaning the floor twice.
Schedule it. Spring cleaning you plan to "get to" doesn't happen. Block the time in your calendar, treat it like an appointment, and tell your household what the plan is.
The Room-by-Room Spring Clean
Kitchen
The kitchen takes the longest and gets the most attention. Start here.
The tasks that don't happen in regular cleaning:
-
Inside of oven: Remove racks and soak in hot soapy water β for the full soak method, see our guide to cleaning oven racks without scrubbing. Apply oven cleaner to the interior cavity (following product instructions), leave to dwell, then wipe out. Clean the oven door glass inside and out β the gap between the glass panels can sometimes be accessed by removing the door (check your oven manual).
-
Rangehood filter: Remove the grease filter and soak in very hot water with dish soap or a degreaser. For heavily loaded filters, dishwasher cycle works well. Dry before replacing.
-
Inside of fridge: Empty the fridge completely. Remove shelves and drawers and wash in the sink with warm soapy water. Wipe the interior walls, ceiling and base with a mild cleaning solution. Wipe door seals β these harbour mould and are consistently missed. Replace items, checking use-by dates and discarding anything past its prime.
-
Inside of cupboards: Empty cupboards one at a time. Wipe shelves and walls. Wipe the base of items before returning them. Check expiry dates on pantry items.
-
Top of fridge and overhead cupboards: Wipe down the accumulated grease and dust from these surfaces.
-
Behind and under the fridge: Pull the fridge out from the wall. Vacuum the condenser coils at the back (a brush attachment works). Mop the floor underneath.
-
Splashback and tile grout: Degrease and scrub the splashback, paying attention to grout lines.
-
Dishwasher: Remove and clean the filter. Wipe the door seal. Run an empty hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner.
-
Sink drain: Pour boiling water down the drain followed by baking soda and vinegar, then flush with more boiling water. This clears accumulated grease and deodorises.
-
Windowsill above sink: Wipe down β this accumulates grease and grime from cooking steam.
Bathrooms
-
Grout: Scrub with a dedicated grout cleaner or diluted bleach and a stiff brush. For badly stained grout, a penetrating grout whitener applied after cleaning makes a visible difference.
-
Shower head: Descale by soaking in white vinegar (bag tied around the head, or removed and soaked). Adelaide's hard water means shower heads clog and slow over time β this restores flow.
-
Exhaust fan: Remove the cover and wash it. Vacuum the fan blades inside the unit if accessible.
-
Behind toilet: Move the toilet if possible, or clean as far behind as accessible. This area accumulates significant grime.
-
Cabinet interiors: Empty bathroom cabinets, wipe shelves, discard expired products.
-
Shower door track and seals: Clean the track at the base of the shower screen β this accumulates soap scum, hair and water β and wipe the seals around the screen frame.
-
Sealant inspection: Check silicone sealant around the bath, shower base and basin. Mouldy or deteriorating sealant should be replaced β no amount of cleaning will make damaged sealant look or function properly.
Bedrooms
-
Under the bed: Pull everything out from under the bed and vacuum the floor underneath. Wash or air any items stored there.
-
Inside wardrobes: Empty section by section. Wipe shelves and rods. Vacuum the wardrobe floor. Clean tracks. This is also the logical time to declutter clothing.
-
Mattress: Vacuum the mattress thoroughly with an upholstery attachment. Flip or rotate if appropriate for your mattress type. Air in the sun if possible β Adelaide's spring sun is good for killing dust mites.
-
Pillows: Wash pillows according to their care label. Down pillows can usually go in the machine on a gentle cycle with a small amount of detergent. Memory foam pillows should be spot-cleaned and aired rather than machine-washed.
-
Curtains or blinds: Remove curtains and wash according to care label, or take to a dry cleaner. Wipe venetian or vertical blind slats individually β this is tedious but necessary.
-
Ceiling fan: Wipe each blade with a damp cloth. The dust that accumulates on fan blades is significant and redistributes through the room every time the fan is used.
-
Light fittings: Dust or wash. Check for dead insects inside enclosed light covers.
-
Skirting boards: Wipe down thoroughly. Skirting boards collect dust and are rarely touched in regular cleaning.
Living Areas
-
Upholstered furniture: Remove cushions and vacuum the sofa thoroughly β including under and behind the cushions, and the sofa base. Use an upholstery attachment. For fabric sofas, a fabric refresher spray after vacuuming helps with odour.
-
Behind and under furniture: Move the TV unit, sofa, armchairs. Vacuum and mop the floor underneath. This area accumulates significant dust and, in Adelaide, the fine dust from summer bushfire season.
-
Bookshelves: Remove books section by section, wipe shelves, wipe spines of books, return.
-
Electronics and cables: Dust the TV screen carefully with a dry microfibre cloth (no moisture on screens). Dust AV equipment. Cable manage behind the TV if you can β tangled cables behind electronics accumulate dust in difficult-to-clean ways.
-
Decorative items: Wipe or dust individually. Group them on one surface to clean the shelf fully, then replace.
-
Sliding door tracks: Vacuum then wipe with a damp cloth. Grime in floor tracks is one of the most satisfying spring clean tasks once done.
-
Windows (internal): Glass, frames, and sills.
Laundry
-
Washing machine drum and seal: For front loaders, wipe the door seal thoroughly β mould in the seal is extremely common and is a significant source of musty washing. Clean the detergent drawer. Run a hot empty cycle with a machine cleaner.
-
Dryer duct: Check the exhaust duct at the back of the dryer for lint accumulation. A clogged dryer duct is a fire risk.
-
Laundry trough: Scrub the sink and the drain.
-
Lint filter: Clean the dryer lint filter. If it's coated in dryer sheet residue, wash it under running water and dry before replacing.
Garage (If Applicable)
-
Declutter first: The garage accumulates objects that have no defined home. Before cleaning, decide what stays and what goes.
-
Sweep and blow out: Use a leaf blower or broom to clear dust, cobwebs and debris from all corners and along walls.
-
Walls and ceiling: Knock down cobwebs from corners and along the ceiling.
-
Oil or chemical stains on floor: Address with a degreaser and stiff brush. Old oil stains may require a poultice treatment to lift properly.
-
Storage reorganisation: Install shelving or hooks if needed to get items off the floor.
External Areas
Adelaide's spring is perfect for outdoor cleaning service in Adelaide before the heat of summer arrives.
-
Gutters: Clear leaf debris from gutters before spring rains. Blocked gutters cause water damage to eaves and walls.
-
Cobwebs from eaves: Use a telescoping broom or cobweb duster to clear spiders and webs from under eaves and around external light fittings.
-
Paved areas: Sweep, then pressure wash if available. Pay attention to moss and algae growth in shaded areas β these are slip hazards.
-
Outdoor furniture: Wipe down and treat appropriately for the material.
-
Fly screens: Remove and wash flat in a tub with soapy water, then allow to dry fully before replacing.
Two Ways to Do This
Option 1: Spread over two weeks. One room per day or every second day. This approach is sustainable and doesn't exhaust you. Kitchen Day 1, bathrooms Day 2, master bedroom Day 3, and so on.
Option 2: A dedicated weekend. Harder but faster. Saturday for the inside (using the room-by-room order above), Sunday for laundry, garage and outdoors.
Either way, have a plan before you start. Know what's in scope. Buy your products beforehand. And resist the urge to skip the hard tasks β the oven, the inside of the fridge, the wardrobe interiors. Those are the tasks that make a spring clean feel genuinely different to regular cleaning.
