Cleaning Products You Should Never Mix (This Is a Safety Issue)
Bleach and vinegar. Bleach and ammonia. Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Some cleaning product combinations produce toxic gases that can seriously harm or kill you. This is not a theoretical risk.
Most household cleaning products are safe when used as directed. The danger comes from combining them β either deliberately in a DIY cleaning recipe, or accidentally when residue from one product contacts another.
Some combinations produce toxic gases. Others cause violent chemical reactions. And others reduce the effectiveness of both products without any hazard β but waste your money and effort.
This post covers the combinations that genuinely matter, what they produce, and how to avoid them.
The Combinations That Can Kill You
These are not exaggerations. The following combinations produce gases that are acutely toxic at the concentrations generated in an enclosed space like a bathroom or kitchen.
Bleach + Ammonia β Chloramine Gas
What products contain ammonia: Many glass cleaners (including some formulations of Windex), some multi-purpose cleaners, floor cleaners, and some oven cleaners. Ammonia is listed as an ingredient on the product label.
What happens: When bleach (sodium hypochlorite) contacts ammonia, the reaction produces chloramine gas (NHβCl). In an enclosed space like a bathroom, the concentration of chloramine gas generated by mixing a common amount of bleach and glass cleaner can be acutely hazardous.
Symptoms of chloramine gas exposure: Coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, eye and throat irritation. At higher concentrations: pulmonary oedema (fluid in the lungs), which can be fatal.
How this happens in practice: Spraying a bleach-based bathroom cleaner over a surface that was just cleaned with an ammonia-based glass cleaner. Or adding bleach to a bucket that previously had a cleaner containing ammonia in it.
The rule: If a product contains bleach, do not mix it with or immediately follow it with any product containing ammonia. Rinse surfaces between products.
Bleach + Acidic Cleaners (Vinegar, Citric Acid, Some Bathroom Descalers) β Chlorine Gas
What products are acidic: White vinegar, citric acid solutions, most bathroom descalers, toilet bowl cleaners, some rust removers.
What happens: Bleach in contact with acid releases chlorine gas (Clβ). Chlorine gas is the chemical weapon used in World War I. At the low concentrations produced domestically it causes coughing, eye irritation and respiratory distress. In a confined space with significant quantities, it can be seriously harmful.
How this happens in practice: Using vinegar to clean a shower and then spraying a bleach-based mould cleaner over the same area. Or mixing bleach with a citric acid descaler to "boost" the cleaning power.
Common misconception: Many people believe mixing bleach with vinegar creates a stronger cleaner. It doesn't. It creates a toxic gas and a less effective cleaning solution (the acid neutralises the bleach's cleaning action).
The rule: Never mix bleach with any acidic product. Use one or the other, never both. If switching between products on the same surface, rinse thoroughly between applications and ventilate.
Bleach + Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl Alcohol) β Chloroform and Other Toxic Compounds
What products contain alcohol: Some disinfectant sprays, hand sanitisers, some glass cleaners, rubbing alcohol.
What happens: Bleach reacts with isopropyl alcohol to produce chloroform and other chlorinated organic compounds. Chloroform at high concentrations causes central nervous system depression, liver and kidney damage. The reaction also produces chloroacetone, which is highly irritating to eyes and airways.
The rule: Don't mix bleach-based products with alcohol-based products. Keep them separate.
Hydrogen Peroxide + Vinegar β Peracetic Acid
This combination is frequently promoted in natural cleaning recipes as a powerful sanitiser β applying each one sequentially to the same surface. There is research suggesting the sequential application (not mixing in the same bottle) can be effective for some sanitising purposes.
However: When hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are mixed or used on the same surface in succession without adequate separation, they produce peracetic acid. At the concentrations generated domestically, peracetic acid causes irritation to eyes, skin and airways. At higher concentrations it is corrosive.
The rule: Don't mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in the same container. If using them on the same surface, allow the first to fully dry before applying the second, or rinse between applications.
Combinations That Are Ineffective (But Not Dangerous)
These don't produce toxic gases, but they're a waste of product:
Bleach + Dish Soap
Some people add dish soap to bleach to "help it clean." The surfactants in dish soap react with the hypochlorite in bleach and reduce its disinfecting effectiveness. You end up with a less effective bleach solution and no meaningful additional cleaning benefit. Use them separately.
Vinegar + Baking Soda
Mixed together, the acid (vinegar) neutralises the alkali (baking soda), producing water, COβ (the fizzing), and sodium acetate. The result is essentially salty water. Different Drain Cleaners Together
Drain cleaners are among the most chemically aggressive products used domestically. Some are acid-based, some are alkali-based. Mixing different drain cleaners β even sequentially without rinsing β can cause violent reactions, heat generation, and splashing of corrosive material.
The rule: Never mix drain cleaners. If one product doesn't work, flush completely with water before trying a different product.
Safe Product Storage
Store chemicals separately from food. Legally required in commercial settings; important practice at home.
Keep products in original containers. Decanting into unlabelled containers removes safety information and creates confusion.
Store away from children. Cleaning chemicals are a significant child poisoning risk in Australian homes. Childproof locks on under-sink cabinets are important.
Don't store incompatible products together. Bleach-based products should not be stored immediately next to acid-based products. If a container leaks or breaks, you don't want a reaction in your storage cupboard.
What to Do in Case of Accidental Mixing
If you accidentally mix cleaning products and notice fumes, stinging eyes, coughing or an unusual smell:
- Leave the area immediately. Don't try to clean it up first.
- Get fresh air β go outside.
- Ventilate the space β open windows and doors if you can do so safely without staying in the space.
- Call Poisons Information Centre (Australia: 13 11 26) if symptoms are present or if you're unsure what you've mixed.
- Call 000 if symptoms are severe β shortness of breath, chest pain, loss of consciousness.
For most accidental brief exposures, fresh air is sufficient. For any significant exposure, call Poisons Information or seek medical attention.
The Simple Rules
- Read labels before mixing or using products near each other.
- Never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, or alcohol.
- Rinse surfaces between incompatible products.
- Ventilate always when using any strong cleaning chemical, regardless of combinations.
- When in doubt, don't mix. Use products separately and rinse thoroughly between them.
