How to Clean a Shower Head (And Why You Should Do It Every 3 Months)
Shower heads in hard water areas like Adelaide block up with limescale within months. But the bigger issue is bacteria — including Legionella — that colonise the internal surfaces. Here's how to clean yours properly.
Shower head cleaning is one of those tasks that almost never appears on anyone's cleaning routine — and yet it matters more than most people realise.
The obvious issue is the practical one: Adelaide's hard water deposits calcium on shower head nozzles over time, partially or fully blocking jets and reducing flow to a dribble. Most people live with a progressively weakening shower for months before doing anything about it.
The less obvious issue is the health one. The warm, wet internal surface of a shower head is an environment where certain bacteria — including Legionella, the organism responsible for Legionnaires' disease — can colonise and multiply. Every shower, these organisms become aerosolised in the spray you're breathing in. Regular cleaning and the right water temperature settings are the appropriate preventive response.
The Limescale Problem
Adelaide's mains water contains relatively high levels of dissolved minerals — primarily calcium and magnesium. Every time water passes through your shower head and evaporates off the nozzle surface, these minerals are deposited as calcium carbonate (limescale).
The nozzle holes in a shower head are small. It doesn't take much accumulation to restrict flow noticeably, and over time individual jets can block completely, causing uneven spray patterns — some jets squirting sideways, some not working at all, the overall pressure dropping.
How fast this happens depends on your specific water supply and how long you run the shower. In Adelaide, most shower heads show visible limescale within 3–6 months of installation and start experiencing reduced flow within 12 months without cleaning.
The Bacteria Problem
Shower heads have a biofilm — a community of microorganisms embedded in an organic matrix — on their internal surfaces. This is normal and unavoidable. The concern is the specific organisms present.
Research published in journals including Environmental Science & Technology has consistently shown that shower head biofilms can contain Mycobacterium species and in some conditions Legionella pneumophila, the bacterium responsible for Legionnaires' disease. When a shower is running, these organisms become aerosolised and are inhaled. For most healthy people this poses a low risk. For immunocompromised individuals, the elderly, or people with respiratory conditions, the risk is higher.
The risk factors that increase bacterial colonisation in shower heads:
- Infrequent use (water sitting stagnant in the shower head allows bacteria to multiply)
- Low hot water temperature (hot water systems set below 60°C don't reliably kill Legionella)
- Plastic shower heads (plastic surfaces support biofilm development more than metal)
- Irregular cleaning
Regular cleaning doesn't eliminate biofilm — but it reduces the population and disrupts the cycle of accumulation.
How Often to Clean a Shower Head
Every 3 months: The minimum for a regularly used shower in Adelaide. Given our water hardness, quarterly cleaning keeps nozzles clear and prevents the more labour-intensive removal of heavy limescale.
Monthly maintenance: A quick vinegar soak on still-attached shower heads is easy to do monthly and prevents buildup entirely.
After any period of non-use: If a shower (or the whole home) has been unoccupied for 2+ weeks, flush the shower head thoroughly with hot water before using it regularly — this addresses stagnant water bacterial accumulation.
Method 1: The Bag Soak (Shower Head Stays Attached)
This is the easiest method and works for regular maintenance and light to moderate limescale.
What you need:
- White vinegar
- A zip-lock bag or small plastic bag
- Rubber band or zip tie
Steps:

Fill a plastic bag with enough white vinegar to submerge the shower head nozzle when the bag is held up to it.

Hold the bag up over the shower head so the nozzle is submerged in the vinegar.

Secure the bag in place with a rubber band around the shower arm. The bag should hold itself up with the nozzle submerged.

Leave for at least 30 minutes. For significant limescale, leave for 2–3 hours or overnight.

Remove the bag, run hot water through the shower head for 30 seconds to flush. Point the shower toward the wall or into the tub during this flush — any loosened deposits will come through the nozzles.

Use an old toothbrush to scrub around the nozzle face and clear any remaining partially blocked holes. A toothpick or a straightened paper clip can clear individual blocked nozzles.

Run the shower for another 30 seconds — the flow should be noticeably improved.
Why it works: White vinegar is approximately 5% acetic acid. Calcium carbonate reacts with the acid and dissolves. This is the same principle used for shower glass descaling — the chemistry is straightforward and effective.
For more significant buildup: Use undiluted vinegar (not diluted with water) and extend the soak to overnight.
Method 2: Remove and Soak (Best Results)
Removing the shower head and soaking it fully gives better access to internal surfaces and is the most effective method for significant buildup or for bacteria-focused cleaning.
What you need:
- Adjustable spanner or pliers
- Teflon tape (plumber's tape)
- Bowl or container
- White vinegar or a dedicated descaler
- Old toothbrush
Steps:

Turn off the water. (You don't need to turn off the mains — just the shower.)

Use the spanner or pliers to unscrew the shower head from the shower arm. Wrap the jaws of the spanner with a cloth to avoid scratching the finish. Turn anticlockwise.

If there's a rubber washer inside, remove and inspect it — replace it if it's cracked or deteriorated (this is a common source of drips and leaks).

Place the shower head in a bowl and cover completely with white vinegar or descaling solution.

Leave for 1–3 hours depending on buildup level.

Remove and scrub all external and accessible internal surfaces with an old toothbrush. Use a toothpick to clear individual nozzles.

Rinse thoroughly under running water. Rinse the shower arm fitting too.

Wrap the threads of the shower arm with a few turns of Teflon tape (clockwise) before reattaching. This prevents leaks and makes future removal easier.

Screw the shower head back on — hand-tight, then a quarter turn with the spanner. Don't over-tighten.

Turn on the shower and check for leaks at the connection. Run the shower for a minute to flush all vinegar and debris.
For Plastic vs Metal Shower Heads
Chrome or stainless steel: Fully safe with white vinegar. Extended soaks (overnight) are fine.
Plastic or rubber-coated nozzles: Most modern plastic shower heads are fine with vinegar soaks of a few hours. Avoid commercial descalers on plastic unless they specifically state plastic-safe — some stronger acid products can damage plastic over time.
Filtered shower heads: Check manufacturer instructions before soaking — the filter cartridge may need to be removed before soaking the rest of the head.
Hot Water Temperature and Legionella
This is worth mentioning because it's directly related to shower head bacteria management. The Legionella bacterium is killed by sustained exposure to water above 60°C. Australian standards recommend:
- Hot water systems set to store water at 60°C minimum
- Hot water delivered to taps at 50°C minimum (with tempering valves to prevent scalding at the outlet)
If your hot water system is set lower than 60°C (some are set to 50°C to reduce scalding risk), the stored water temperature may not be sufficient to kill Legionella reliably. This is a plumbing and hot water system question — but it's related to the overall risk picture for shower head bacteria.
Replacing vs Cleaning
If a shower head:
- Has nozzles so blocked that cleaning doesn't restore adequate flow
- Is visibly corroded, cracked or damaged
- Is an older plastic model that has developed significant biofilm accumulation over years
...replacement is often the more practical solution. Modern shower heads are inexpensive ($20–$80 for a basic quality option) and installation is a simple DIY task following the removal method above.
When replacing, consider:
- Metal over plastic for lower biofilm accumulation
- Silicone nozzles for easier limescale removal (the nozzles flex and limescale falls off when pressed)
- A model appropriate for your water pressure
