How to Clean Stainless Steel Without Leaving Streaks
Stainless steel shows every fingerprint, streak and smear. Here's the professional method for cleaning stainless steel appliances, benchtops and fixtures without leaving a trace.
Stainless steel looks fantastic when it's clean and absolutely terrible when it's not. It shows fingerprints, grease, water marks and streaks more clearly than almost any other surface β and it has a reputation for being difficult to clean properly.
The irony is that cleaning stainless steel well is not complicated. But it does require understanding two things that most people don't know: the grain direction of the steel, and the right product and cloth combination. Get those two things right and stainless steel becomes one of the most satisfying surfaces to clean.
Get them wrong and you'll spend twice as much time achieving half the result.
Understanding Stainless Steel: The Grain
Stainless steel has a grain β a directional pattern of fine lines in the surface, similar to wood grain. Look closely at your fridge door, oven or dishwasher front and you'll see it: fine parallel lines running either horizontally or vertically.
This grain is the key to streak-free cleaning. Always wipe in the direction of the grain β never across it.
Wiping across the grain pushes debris and product into the channels between the fine lines rather than along them. This is what creates streaks and smears that seem impossible to remove. Wiping with the grain pulls product and debris out along the surface of those lines and results in a clean, even finish.
Before you touch any stainless steel surface with a cloth, identify the grain direction and commit to it.
What Not to Use on Stainless Steel
Before the method, a quick note on what causes the most problems:
Steel wool or abrasive scouring pads: These will scratch stainless steel permanently. The scratches create sites where bacteria can harbour and where further staining accumulates. Never use abrasive pads on stainless steel.
Bleach or chlorine-based products: Chlorine corrodes stainless steel over time and can cause pitting and discolouration. Don't use bleach or bleach-based sprays on stainless steel surfaces.
Regular kitchen spray (most of them): Most multi-surface kitchen sprays leave a residue on stainless steel that creates the haze and streaking you're trying to avoid. They also often contain surfactants that attract more fingerprints after cleaning.
Paper towels: Paper towels leave lint and fine fibres on stainless steel that show up immediately, particularly on dark or polished steel. Use microfibre cloths only.
Circular motions: Wiping in circles cuts across the grain in multiple directions and is the primary cause of streaking. Only ever wipe in straight lines with the grain.
The Method: Routine Cleaning (Fingerprints and Light Grime)
For everyday maintenance cleaning β removing fingerprints, smudges and light grease β this is the professional method.
What you need:
- 2 clean microfibre cloths (one damp, one dry)
- A small amount of dish soap or dedicated stainless steel cleaner
- Or: a few drops of mineral oil for a finishing polish
Steps:

Identify the grain direction. Look closely at the surface in good light.

Dampen one microfibre cloth with warm water. Wring it well β you want damp, not wet. Excess water leaves water marks.

Add a very small amount of dish soap to the damp cloth, or use a dedicated stainless steel spray applied to the cloth (not directly to the surface β spraying directly causes product to pool and streak).

Wipe in the direction of the grain with even, overlapping strokes. Work in sections β don't try to do a large surface in one stroke. Keep your strokes consistent and parallel to the grain.

Rinse the cloth and wipe again with a clean damp cloth (no soap) to remove any soap residue.

Immediately dry with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Wipe in the grain direction. Do not let water air-dry on stainless steel.

Optional finishing step: Apply a tiny amount of mineral oil to a dry cloth and buff with the grain. This removes any remaining micro-smears, adds a subtle shine, and creates a very light protective layer that repels fingerprints for a few days. Baby oil works just as well as dedicated stainless steel polish.
The Method: Heavier Cleaning (Grease and Cooked-On Residue)
For stovetops, rangehood surfaces and areas around the oven where grease has built up:
What you need:
- Dish soap or a degreaser (check it's safe for stainless steel β avoid anything with bleach or ammonia)
- Warm water
- Non-scratch scrubbing pad (white or blue, never green or steel wool)
- 2 microfibre cloths
Steps:

Apply warm soapy water or diluted degreaser to the surface and allow to dwell for 2β3 minutes. For baked-on grease, 5β10 minutes dwell time makes a significant difference.

Using a non-scratch scrubbing pad, scrub in the direction of the grain with moderate pressure. The dwell time should have softened the grease enough that you don't need heavy scrubbing.

Wipe the surface clean with a damp microfibre cloth, wiping with the grain.

Follow with a dry microfibre cloth immediately to remove all moisture.

Finish with mineral oil if desired.
Removing Specific Types of Staining
Water Marks and Limescale (Common in Adelaide)
Hard water leaves a white mineral deposit (calcium carbonate) on stainless steel β particularly around sinks and taps. Regular stainless steel cleaners don't dissolve mineral deposits.
Method: Apply a small amount of white vinegar to a damp cloth and wipe with the grain over the affected area. The acetic acid dissolves the calcium. Rinse thoroughly immediately after β vinegar left on stainless steel can dull the finish over time. Dry and polish.
For heavier mineral buildup, a citric acid solution (citric acid powder dissolved in warm water) is more effective and gentler than vinegar.
Rust Spots
True stainless steel doesn't rust β but it can develop rust-coloured spots if steel particles from other sources (steel wool, cast iron cookware, certain water sources) land on the surface and oxidise.
Method: Make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to the rust spot and leave for 10 minutes. Rub gently with the grain using a damp cloth. Rinse and dry. For persistent spots, a dedicated stainless steel rust remover is available at hardware stores.
Burn Marks
Burn marks from a hot pot placed directly on a stainless steel benchtop or the area around a stovetop burner.
Method: Apply a small amount of Bar Keeper's Friend (a non-abrasive oxalic acid based cleaner that's safe on stainless steel) to a damp cloth. Rub with the grain. This works on heat discolouration and light burn marks. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
Do not use Bar Keeper's Friend on stainless steel sinks if they have a coloured coating.
Different Stainless Steel Finishes and How They Affect Cleaning
Brushed Stainless Steel
The most common finish on kitchen appliances. The grain is visible and consistent. Follows the standard method above perfectly.
Mirror Polished Stainless Steel
Highly reflective, almost like a mirror. Shows every mark more than brushed steel. Still has a grain but it's very fine. Use the same method but be gentler β more susceptible to micro-scratching from abrasive materials.
Fingerprint-Resistant Coated Steel
Many modern appliances have a factory-applied fingerprint-resistant coating. Check the manufacturer's instructions before using any cleaning product β some coatings are damaged by acidic cleaners or oil-based polishes. For coated steel, a damp microfibre cloth is often all that's needed.
Maintaining Stainless Steel: Making It Easier Long-Term
A few habits that make stainless steel significantly easier to keep clean:
Wipe up spills and splatters immediately. The longer grease, food or water sits on stainless steel, the harder it is to remove. A quick wipe with a damp cloth immediately after cooking takes 5 seconds. Cleaning baked-on splatter takes 10 minutes.
Dry after every wet contact. Any time water β including from rinsing β makes contact with stainless steel, dry it immediately. This prevents water marks entirely.
Monthly mineral oil treatment. Once a month, buff all stainless steel appliances with a tiny amount of mineral oil. It doesn't just look good β it creates a light barrier that reduces fingerprint adhesion and makes the next clean significantly faster.
Avoid magnets on stainless steel fridges. This sounds unrelated to cleaning, but magnets β particularly cheap ones β can scratch stainless steel finish and leave rust deposits.
Summary
The two things that matter most: grain direction and drying immediately. Everything else is secondary. Wipe with the grain every time, never let water air-dry, and use microfibre cloths rather than paper towels. Master those three habits and your stainless steel will look consistently clean without the frustrating smearing and streaking.
